Furnace
Most homeowners choose a furnace for their home heating. It can be powered by gas, electricity, oil or propane. It uses a fan to drive the hot air through the ductwork and into your home.
The main issue with this type of forced air systems is the efficiency, however newer models are designed in more economical ways. With a furnace you will need to make sure that your ductwork is kept sealed or your heat will get lost.
Another reason why a furnace is most homeowners choice is because they can also be used for central air conditioning in the summer as well.
Boiler
A boiler heats hot water and then distributes it to radiators, baseboard units or radiant heat tubes which is placed under the floor. Even though they may not be as popular as furnaces, a boiler system is usually very efficient and is a good choice provided that you do not need central air conditioning. The downside to a boiler is the cost that it takes to install it under the floor.
Baseboard Heaters
Baseboard heaters are usually very easy to install and can be used as needed. The downside of a baseboard is the cost of electricity in powering them, its a lot higher than natural gas.
Other Heating Options
Fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters and kerosene heaters are other options for homeowners wanting to heat their homes. They can be very cost efficient, but also dangerous as proper ventilation is needed to prevent fires in the home .
